On the night of October 12, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a residential street in Bristol, Connecticut, forever altering the lives of many. Dustin Demonte, a 35-year-old Caucasian male and a sergeant with the Bristol Police Department, responded to what he believed was a routine domestic disturbance call between two brothers. Little did he know, he was being lured into a deadly ambush that would cut his life tragically short.
The 911 call was a deliberate fabrication by 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher, who was waiting for the officers to arrive.
Earlier that evening, Brutcher and his brother, Nathan, had been involved in an altercation at a local bar which resulted in a police response. Angered by the earlier encounter, Nicholas Brutcher, armed with an AR-15-style rifle, concealed himself and waited for the officers to arrive at his home. As Sergeant Demonte, along with Officer Alex Hamzy and Officer Alec Iurato, approached the residence, Nicholas Brutcher opened fire from the yard of a neighboring house. The attack was sudden and brutal, leaving Demonte and Hamzy with fatal injuries.
In the chaotic moments that followed, the gunman, Nicholas Brutcher, was shot and killed at the scene by the wounded Officer Iurato, who had managed to find cover. Brutcher's brother, Nathan, who was also present at the scene, was injured during the exchange of gunfire. The investigation later revealed that Nicholas Brutcher fired approximately 80 rounds during the incident. The tragic event left the Bristol community in mourning for the two fallen officers who were posthumously promoted, Demonte to Lieutenant and Hamzy to Sergeant. There were no other suspects arrested in connection with the deadly ambush.
