In the spring of 1899, a dispute over a mayoral election in Hot Springs, Arkansas, escalated into a tragic and violent confrontation that resulted in the death of 47-year-old male police officer Thomas Ferdinand Goslee. The fatal encounter unfolded when a neighboring sheriff, his son, and three of his deputies entered the town and engaged in a heated argument with local law enforcement officers and a bartender.
The initial confrontation appeared to de-escalate as the sheriff and his party left the scene. However, they soon returned, and the simmering tensions quickly boiled over. The situation exploded into a gunfight when the bartender reportedly attacked one of the deputies with a knife. In the ensuing chaos, Officer Goslee, along with Hot Springs Police Chief Thomas Toler and Officer J.E. Hart, were shot and killed. The bartender and one of the deputies also lost their lives in the exchange of gunfire.
In the aftermath of the deadly shootout, the sheriff, his son, and the two surviving deputies were taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. The legal proceedings that followed, however, did not lead to any convictions. Two of the accused were tried and acquitted of the charges against them. The trials of the remaining two men ended in hung juries, leaving the deaths of Officer Goslee and his colleagues without a final legal resolution. Thomas Ferdinand Goslee was survived by his wife and three sons.
