In early 1945, the disappearance of a 30-year-old male truck driver named Doyle Mulherin set off a grim investigation. Mulherin, who was employed by a meatpacking company in Little Rock, was last seen leaving for a delivery. He never reached his destination. Hours later, his vehicle was found abandoned near Stuttgart, a city about 40 miles southeast of Little Rock in Arkansas County. The discovery of the truck prompted a search of the surrounding area.
