In the winter of 1996, the community of Hot Springs, Arkansas, was shaken by the sudden and violent death of one of its own. Christopher Bruce Anderson, a 36-year-old male Patrol Officer with the Hot Springs Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty on February 12th. Anderson, a respected officer with 12 years of service, was attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a residence on Lafayette Street.
The situation escalated tragically when the subject of the warrant, after being allowed to go inside his home to get dressed, emerged with a handgun. Without warning, he fired at Officer Anderson, striking him twice in the throat. The wounds proved to be instantly fatal. Following the shooting, the assailant stole Anderson's service weapon and patrol car, initiating a pursuit with other law enforcement officers.
The suspect, who had a documented history of mental illness, led officers on both a vehicle and a subsequent foot chase before he was ultimately apprehended. Following his arrest, he was charged with the murder of Officer Christopher Bruce Anderson. The legal proceedings that followed found the man guilty of this heinous crime, and he was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the dedicated officer. Officer Anderson was survived by his wife and daughter.
