On May 20, 2010, Officer Thomas William "Bill" Evans, aged 38, of the West Memphis Police Department in Arkansas, was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Airport Road. Officer Evans, a nine-year veteran of the force and member of the Drug Interdiction Unit, had initiated the stop due to a traffic violation. Sergeant Brandon Paudert, aged 39, arrived shortly thereafter to provide backup.
