A tragic string of violence unfolded in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on May 3, 2014, claiming the life of 38-year-old Hispanic male Crisanto Islas-Quijano and three others. The chaos began around 1:00 p.m. at a home on Moore Road, where a total of six individuals were shot. Among the fatally wounded were Islas-Quijano and 12-year-old Floza Davila. Four others at the residence sustained injuries: Ayde Davila, 36, Augusten Hernandez, 43, and two young boys, ages 10 and 8.
The injured were transported to medical facilities in Memphis for treatment.
Shortly after the initial attack, the violence spilled over to a second location on Dalton Farmer Drive, where 34-year-old Richardo Lopez was shot and killed. Authorities quickly identified 40-year-old Porfirio S. Hernandez as the sole suspect in all the shootings. It is believed that Hernandez was an acquaintance of the victims. The weapon used in the deadly assaults was a. 357 magnum handgun.
Approximately two hours after the rampage began, law enforcement located Hernandez in his vehicle on County Road 642. He was found deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The subsequent investigation revealed that Hernandez had been released from a mental health facility just days prior to the shootings, where he had reportedly sought help for fears that he was going to kill someone.
With the death of the suspect, the investigation into the deaths of Crisanto Islas-Quijano, Floza Davila, and Richardo Lopez was closed. No further arrests were made in connection with the devastating events of that day, which left a community to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss of life.
