In the autumn of 2014, a quiet street in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, became the scene of a tragedy that left a family and community in mourning. On the morning of October 7th, concern grew for 64-year-old Sandra Jo Williams and her husband, John Richard Williams, when family and friends were unable to get in contact with them. This unsettling silence prompted a call to the Pine Bluff Police Department for a welfare check at their home in the 4000 block of Thompson Road.
When officers arrived
at approximately 9:30 a.m., they were met by a friend of the couple and a realtor. After repeated attempts to get someone to answer the door failed, the realtor unlocked the home to allow the officers inside. What they discovered was a heartbreaking scene; both Sandra and John were found deceased within their residence.
The Pine Bluff Police Department's Detective Division immediately launched an investigation into the deaths. The preliminary evidence at the scene led investigators to believe that the incident was a murder-suicide. The bodies of Sandra and her 68-year-old husband were taken to the Jefferson County Coroner's office before being sent to the state crime lab for autopsies to officially determine the cause and manner of their deaths. This incident marked the thirteenth homicide in the city of Pine Bluff that year. Sandra, who was born in Joliet, Illinois, on September 15, 1950, had resided in Pine Bluff with her husband for the preceding decade. The family announced that a private service would be held.
