In the early morning hours of October 25, 2014, the life of 12-year-old Joshua JaShawn Wilson, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his Forrest City, Arkansas home. An intruder forced his way into the residence on West South Street through a bedroom window, forever altering the lives of the family inside. Joshua was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to his face.
The assailant did not stop there.
A second individual, a 16-year-old boy, was also found in the home, suffering from severe head injuries that were believed to have been inflicted with a firearm. He was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition and required multiple surgeries to address his injuries. The quiet of the morning was shattered by an act of violence that left a community in mourning.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in the brutal attack: 28-year-old Ricardo McDaniel. McDaniel was reportedly the ex-boyfriend of Joshua's mother. Later that same day, law enforcement officers apprehended him as he was crossing the River Bridge at the state line in West Helena. McDaniel was subsequently arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder, among other related offenses.
Joshua Wilson was a seventh-grade student at Forrest City Junior High School where he had recently been honored as the student of the week. He was an active member of Boy Scouts Troop #202 and was remembered for his love of playing football and basketball with his friends and older brother. Those who knew him recalled a contagious smile that could light up a room, a bright young life extinguished far too soon.
