In the pre-dawn hours of a Friday in Springdale, Arkansas, a confrontation between two groups of young people culminated in a fatal shooting that left one teenager dead and two others wounded. The deceased was identified as 18-year-old Fabian Rodriguez. The incident, which police later suggested was possibly gang-related, unfolded around 3:21 a.m. on March 13, 2015, at the Applegate Apartments.
That morning, Rodriguez was part of a group that approached an apartment where 17-year-old
Hector Saul Ramos resided. Accounts from the scene indicate that as Rodriguez's group began banging on the window of the residence, one individual was allegedly armed with a machete. In response to the commotion, Ramos procured a handgun and began firing through his window at the people outside. Rodriguez and two of his companions, a 14-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman, were struck by the gunfire.
As the injured group attempted to flee the scene, Ramos exited his apartment and continued to shoot at them. Rodriguez, suffering from a gunshot wound, was transported by ambulance to Northwest Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The machete was reportedly found near his body. The other two victims were also taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries and were later released.
Responding to multiple calls reporting gunshots, Springdale police arrived to find Rodriguez wounded. Their investigation quickly led them to identify Hector Saul Ramos as the shooter, and he was taken into custody. Despite being a minor at the time of the shooting, Ramos was charged as an adult. The initial charges included second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree battery, and possession of a handgun by a minor. The murder charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder. During the subsequent legal proceedings, a jury found Ramos not guilty of the murder charge. He was ultimately convicted of negligent homicide and two counts of first-degree battery. For these crimes, he was sentenced to five years of probation and received a six-month suspended sentence for the negligent homicide conviction.
