In the summer of 2019, the city of Jonesboro, Arkansas, was rocked by a grim discovery that unfolded on Melrose Street. On the morning of Thursday, July 18th, police officers who were patrolling the area were flagged down by a concerned neighbor. The neighbor led them to an apartment where a tragic scene awaited. Inside, officers found the bodies of two siblings, 37-year-old Johnny Russell and his 38-year-old sister, Kafena Russell.
Both had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly painted a somber picture of the preceding hours. Witnesses recalled hearing what sounded like gunshots in the vicinity around 11 p.m. on the Wednesday night before the siblings were found. However, no calls were made to dispatch at that time to report the sounds. The quiet passage of the night belied the violence that had taken place within the walls of the Melrose Street apartment. The bodies of Johnny and Kafena remained undiscovered until the following morning.
As detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division began to piece together the evidence, an arrest was made in connection with the double homicide.
