In Fort Smith, Arkansas, the story of Joshua John Flanagan, a 37-year-old man, came to a tragic and abrupt end on Thursday, January 7, 2021. A self-employed handyman, he was the father of three daughters. His life was cut short in a fatal confrontation over a piece of modern technology that has become ubiquitous in daily life: a cell phone.
The series of events that led to his death began when 27-year-old Kelsey Dampier reported her cell phone stolen.
Utilizing an application to 'ping' the location of her missing device, Dampier was able to track it. Her search first led her to one residence in Fort Smith, where she allegedly made comments about being willing to 'kill someone' over her stolen phone.
Continuing to follow the phone's signal, Dampier was led to a second location where she confronted Flanagan. It was there that the dispute escalated, and Dampier allegedly shot Flanagan. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident was particularly tragic for the Flanagan family, as it marked the second violent death of a family member in a year; Joshua's cousin, Richard Todd Flanagan, had been killed in a separate confrontation almost exactly one year prior.
