On March 4, 2021, the community was shaken by the news of her death, a devastating outcome of domestic violence. The incident unfolded at her residence where her boyfriend forcibly gained entry. In a brutal act, he shot Akilia, inflicting fatal injuries that she would not survive.
She succumbed to her wounds at the scene, her life abruptly ended.
The horror of the event was compounded by the suspect's subsequent actions. After shooting Akilia, her boyfriend turned the weapon on himself in an apparent suicide attempt. He was found with grave injuries and was quickly airlifted to a hospital in Memphis for emergency medical treatment, where he was listed in extremely critical condition. The authorities indicated that should he survive, he would be facing a first-degree murder charge for Akilia's death, a stark reminder of the legal consequences that would follow the personal tragedy.
