On the evening of May 6, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the peace in the small city of Brinkley, Arkansas, leading to the untimely death of 33-year-old Bernard Pearson. The fatal encounter unfolded shortly before 6:00 PM in the parking lot of the Brinkley Housing Authority office located at 418 Chicago Street. Pearson was shot at the scene and found alive by local police who were the first to arrive.
Emergency medical attention was rendered, and he was quickly transported to a
hospital in Forrest City in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Bernard Pearson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that night. The investigation into the shooting was promptly taken over by the Arkansas State Police at the request of the Brinkley Police Department, with special agents from the Criminal Investigation Division leading the inquiry.
In a surprising turn of events, a 26-year-old man from Fayetteville later surrendered himself to the local police in connection with the shooting. State police special agents interviewed the unnamed suspect, and he was held in custody at the request of the Monroe County prosecuting attorney as the investigation continued. Authorities reported that neither Pearson nor the suspect were employees or residents of the housing authority where the incident occurred. Following his death, Pearson's body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to officially determine the cause and manner of death.
