A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for 19-year-old Hakim Williams. Authorities considered him to be armed and extremely dangerous. The search for Williams concluded on December 9, 2021, when he was located in Van Buren. After a police pursuit that began in Fort Smith, Williams abandoned his vehicle and was apprehended without further incident.

According to their accounts, Tabut had lifted his shirt to show he was unarmed when Williams allegedly fired multiple shots with an AK-47 style pistol, striking Tabut twice.
