In the quiet community of Mountain View, Arkansas, the life of 55-year-old James Cecil Watters, a United States Army veteran, was brought to a tragic and violent end on April 21, 2022. On that Thursday, Watters and his 77-year-old mother, Shirley Gail Watters, were discovered deceased in their home on Northcutt Road. Both had been fatally shot. The grim discovery of the mother and son was the beginning of a larger, more shocking revelation for the small Stone County community.
As law
enforcement, including the Arkansas State Police, began their investigation into the double homicide, their attention was drawn to a second crime scene merely a quarter-mile away. There, another horrific scene awaited them. William Clinton Trammell, 75, and his wife, Sharon Trammell, 72, were also found shot to death inside their residence. The proximity of the two scenes and the violent nature of the crimes sent a wave of fear and uncertainty through the rural area.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a person of interest. Donnie Lee Trammell, the 54-year-old son of William and Sharon Trammell and a neighbor to the Watters, was identified as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody on unrelated probation violations the day after the four bodies were discovered. Investigators pieced together evidence that ultimately led to Trammell being charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also charged as a habitual offender.
In March 2024, the case came to a resolution when Donnie Lee Trammell, then 56, pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder in Stone County Circuit Court. His plea brought an end to the legal proceedings and the lingering questions surrounding the brutal deaths of his parents and his neighbors. Trammell was sentenced to 60 years in the Arkansas Division of Correction for the quadruple homicide that had deeply shaken the community of Mountain View.
