In the quiet community of Mountain View, Arkansas, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short on a Tuesday afternoon. Deputy Justin Smith, a 60-year-old male with a long-standing commitment to law enforcement, was fatally wounded in the line of duty on January 2, 2024. A veteran of 24 years in law enforcement, with 14 of those years spent with the Stone County Sheriff's Department, Smith was known as a man who always greeted people with a smile and never met a stranger.
His lifelong dream was to serve his community, a dream he fulfilled with passion and dedication.
On that fateful day, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Deputy Smith was attempting to serve a misdemeanor warrant for terroristic threatening at a residence on Sawmill Road, located about five miles north of Mountain View. The subject of the warrant was 52-year-old Clinton Hefton. During the attempt to serve the warrant, authorities report that Hefton resisted arrest and opened fire on Deputy Smith. Responding officers who had been alerted to shots fired discovered the mortally wounded deputy.
Following the shooting, a brief standoff ensued between law enforcement and Hefton. He was subsequently taken into custody and is being held at the Cleburne County Detention Center. Hefton has been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Deputy Smith. The investigation into the incident was turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Arkansas State Police.
