In the quiet community of Ashdown, Arkansas, a verbal dispute within a family home escalated into a tragedy, ending the life of 37-year-old Joshua John Yaeger. On July 26, 2022, Yaeger, a male, was involved in a heated argument with his mother's live-in boyfriend, 65-year-old Walter Richard Duermit Jr. The confrontation took place in the bedroom of a house located in the Richmond Community of Ashdown.
During the course of the argument, Duermit allegedly produced a firearm.
Despite Yaeger being reportedly unarmed, Duermit is accused of firing a single shot, which proved to be fatal for Yaeger. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident. The sudden and violent nature of the event left the family and community in shock. Yaeger was remembered as a skilled carpenter, a loving father, son, and brother with a great sense of humor who enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, and playing his guitar.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement was called to the residence. Walter Richard Duermit Jr. was arrested at the scene without any resistance. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Joshua Yaeger. Following his arrest, Duermit was booked into the Little River County jail.
The legal process began to unfold, and Duermit appeared before a circuit judge for his initial appearance. During this hearing, the public defender's office was appointed to represent him, and his bail was set at $250,000. In addition to the murder charge, prosecutors filed for an enhancement for the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. This enhancement could potentially add a significant number of years to his sentence if he is convicted of the primary charge. The case was scheduled to proceed with an arraignment in early September of the same year.
