On October 4, 2022, in Little Rock, Arkansas, 1-year-old RaNiyah Akira Basir tragically lost her life due to a gunshot wound. Her mother, 29-year-old Keiundrea Davis, contacted emergency services just after noon to report the incident at their residence on Doe Run Drive. Upon arrival, authorities discovered RaNiyah with a gunshot wound to the head. Davis informed officers that her daughter had accidentally shot herself.
Despite efforts to save her, RaNiyah was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Following the incident, the Little Rock Police Department initiated an investigation. Detectives and the Crime Scene Search Unit examined the home and surrounding area. As a result, Davis was arrested and charged with manslaughter, with a bond set at $50,000. Additionally, 25-year-old Rahim Basir, another resident of the home and RaNiyah's father, was arrested on charges of criminal use of a prohibited weapon and possession of a firearm by certain persons. His bond was set at $75,000.
The case highlights the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes with young children. Authorities have emphasized the importance of safely storing firearms to prevent such tragedies. The community has been left mourning the loss of a young life, and the incident has sparked discussions on gun safety and child protection measures.
