On November 3, 1973, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in Tucson, Arizona, culminating in the death of 28-year-old Marine Captain Michael Sandberg. The day began with two men, Douglas Gretzler and Willie Steelman, kidnapping a man named Vincent Armstrong. Armstrong managed to escape from his moving vehicle and alert the authorities. His captors then proceeded to a condominium complex where they encountered Michael Sandberg washing his car in the parking lot.

at gunpoint, Gretzler and Steelman entered his home where his wife, Patricia, was present. The two intruders held the couple hostage inside their own condominium. As the day turned to night, the situation escalated horrifically. Gretzler and Steelman bound and gagged both Michael and Patricia. Gretzler then shot Michael in the head, using a pillow to muffle the sound of the gunshot. He proceeded to shoot Patricia as well. To ensure she was dead, Steelman also fired a shot into her body.
The discovery of the murders was not immediate. It was only after Gretzler and Steelman were arrested two days later in Sacramento, California, for a subsequent and brutal crime spree, that their connection to the Sandberg case came to light. Authorities in California, upon arresting the pair, found them in possession of a car registered to Michael Sandberg. This prompted Tucson police to go to the Sandberg residence, where they tragically found the bodies of the couple. Fingerprints lifted from the scene were later matched to Gretzler and Steelman.
While in custody in California, Douglas Gretzler confessed to the murders of both Michael and Patricia Sandberg. He and Willie Steelman were ultimately convicted for the slayings. Their crime spree extended beyond the murders in Tucson, as they were also responsible for the deaths of nine people in Lodi, California, just days after killing the Sandbergs. Douglas Edward Gretzler was sentenced to death and remained on death row for over two decades before being executed in 1998. His accomplice, Willie Luther Steelman, a mental hospital escapee, died in prison in 1987.
