On New Year's Eve 1980, as he and his wife, Marilyn, were preparing for a party at their Phoenix, Arizona home, 46-year-old William Patrick 'Pat' Redmond was met by three men at his door. The men, one of whom was a former police officer, forced their way into the residence at gunpoint. They rounded up Redmond, his wife, and his 70-year-old mother-in-law, Helen Phelps, who was visiting for the holiday.
