On a late evening in Maricopa County, Arizona, Deputy Vernon P. Marconnet, a 19-year veteran of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, was on patrol when he came across two suspicious vehicles parked near a canal bank off S. Carver Road. As he stopped to investigate, he encountered a father and his three adult sons who had been drinking and were in the midst of a heated argument.
