On a late evening in Maricopa County, Arizona, Deputy Vernon P. Marconnet, a 19-year veteran of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, was on patrol when he came across two suspicious vehicles parked near a canal bank off S. Carver Road. As he stopped to investigate, he encountered a father and his three adult sons who had been drinking and were in the midst of a heated argument.
Shortly after calling for backup, a distress call was made to 911, urgently stating that an officer was in trouble.
Responding officers arrived at a grim scene, finding Deputy Marconnet deceased beside his patrol car. The investigation that followed pieced together the tragic final moments of the deputy's life. As he was attempting to place the father into his vehicle, one of the sons viciously struck him in the head with his own police radio, causing a significant injury. Another son then seized Deputy Marconnet's firearm and forced him to the ground.
At the command of their father, one of the sons then fatally shot Deputy Marconnet in the head. The four men were quickly apprehended and all were charged with murder. In the subsequent legal proceedings, the father and the two sons who directly participated in the fatal assault were convicted of murder and sentenced to death. These sentences were later commuted to life in prison. The third son, through a plea agreement, was sentenced to 10 years for his involvement. One of the convicted sons was denied parole as recently as 2021.
