In what was described as the worst homicide in the history of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, 42-year-old Russell Alan Nyland, a male, was shot and killed on the night of August 28, 2010. The tragic event unfolded at a birthday party on Opossum Drive, forever altering the lives of a close-knit family and shocking the community. Russell, his wife Deborah, and their 20-year-old daughter Ashleigh were among the attendees at the celebration for their daughter's friend's boyfriend.
The evening of celebration turned into a scene of terror when a gunman, identified as 26-year-old Brian Diez, entered the residence and opened fire. Diez was reportedly the ex-boyfriend of another partygoer and the father of her two children. In the midst of the chaos, Russell and his daughter Ashleigh were fatally wounded. Deborah Nyland was also shot but managed to make a harrowing 911 call, reporting the intruder and the devastating scene of multiple people shot.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Diez fled the scene with his two young children, prompting an Amber Alert. He drove to Southern California, where he ultimately took his own life. The senseless act of violence claimed the lives of five people in total, including Russell and Ashleigh Nyland. Deborah Nyland was the sole survivor of the horrific attack.
