Deputy Sgt. Richard Lopez, a 51-year-old member of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, lost his life in the line of duty on June 28, 2022. The incident occurred near Stagecoach Trail and Red Rock Lane in Cordes Lakes, Arizona, when Sgt. Lopez was attempting to apprehend a suspect.

During the arrest attempt, the suspect shot Sgt. Lopez. The shooting led to a subsequent standoff with law enforcement. Despite immediate medical attention, Sgt. Lopez succumbed to his injuries.
