On a tragic day in June 2011, Jerrold 'Jerry' Fremont Shelley, a 62-year-old male attorney, was killed in a violent shooting spree that spanned across Yuma and Wellton, Arizona. The incident, which claimed the lives of four other individuals, was carried out by 73-year-old Carey Hal Dyess.
The series of events unfolded on the morning of June 2nd, when Dyess began targeting individuals connected to his divorce. One of his victims was his ex-wife, Theresa Lorraine Sigurdson.
Jerrold Shelley, who had represented Sigurdson during the couple's 2006 divorce proceedings, was also a target. Dyess drove to Shelley's downtown Yuma law office on what was supposed to be the attorney's last day of work. Upon entering the office, Dyess ordered the secretary to leave before fatally shooting Shelley.
The rampage also resulted in the deaths of Henry Scott Finney, James P. Simpson, and Norene Evalyn “Cindy” Hicks Finney, who were friends of Dyess's ex-wife and had supported her through the divorce. Another friend of Sigurdson's was wounded during the attacks. After the shootings, Dyess drove back toward Wellton, pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road, and took his own life. Authorities believe Dyess's motive was dissatisfaction with the outcome of his divorce and a feeling that his ex-wife and her friends were against him.
