In the quiet town of Taylors, South Carolina, a dispute between roommates culminated in a tragic loss of life. On the evening of December 11, 2024, deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Confederate Circle following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 47-year-old Joseph Sterling Barker suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The Greenville County Coroner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound and officially ruled it a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly pointed towards Barker's roommate, 47-year-old Frederick Bernard Williams. Authorities revealed that an ongoing conflict between the two men had escalated, leading to the fatal encounter. In the course of their investigation, deputies also uncovered an unrelated domestic violence incident involving Williams that had occurred just the day before. This discovery added another layer to the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Joseph Barker.
Frederick Bernard Williams was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges. These included murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and two counts of possession of a firearm by a person with certain prior convictions. An additional charge for possession of less than one gram of methamphetamine was also filed against him. Williams was taken into custody and is being held without bond at the Greenville County Detention Center as the investigation into the shooting continues.
Joseph Sterling Barker, a White male, is remembered by his family as a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, two daughters, a sister, and three grandchildren. His family has announced that a celebration of his life will be held at a later date, allowing friends and loved ones to gather and honor his memory.
