On November 24, 2024, 17-year-old Syrina Marie Raneri of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, tragically lost her life due to a gunshot wound. She was discovered in the basement of a residence on the 100 block of Sheridan Street, where she had been shot in the upper chest. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred when Syrina visited the home of 17-year-old Kaden Woodring.
According to reports, Woodring retrieved a hunting rifle from the basement and, while interacting with Syrina, allegedly remarked, "I'm just playin'," before pulling the trigger. The shooting was ruled a homicide by the Cambria County Coroner.
Following the incident, Woodring fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after when he contacted an officer by phone. He was charged as an adult with criminal homicide and multiple counts of aggravated assault. The firearm used in the shooting was reported to be stolen, though it had not been recovered at the time of the arrest.
This tragic event has underscored the critical importance of gun safety and the need for responsible firearm handling, especially among teenagers. Authorities have emphasized the preventability of such incidents and the necessity for vigilance in environments where firearms are present.
