On December 9, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Cleveland police responded to a shooting near the intersection of West 28th Street and Detroit Avenue in the Ohio City neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 54-year-old Harry Lee "Tray" Gist III with a gunshot wound. Emergency Medical Services provided immediate treatment at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Gist and an unidentified individual were involved in a physical altercation that escalated, resulting in Gist being shot. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit continues to investigate the incident. Authorities have not released any information regarding potential suspects.
Harry Lee "Tray" Gist III was born on December 1, 1970, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the beloved son of Virginia "Gin" and the late Harry Lee "June" Gist Jr. Gist is survived by his children, Monique N. Knight and Tre’ Gin Gist; his brother, Isaac A. "Ike" Gist; and his grandson, Levi C. Cruz. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members and friends. Known for his devotion to the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers, Gist will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Homegoing Service is scheduled for December 29, 2024, at Slone & Co. Life Celebration Center in Cleveland, providing an opportunity for family and friends to pay their respects and honor Gist's memory.
