On December 16, 2024, 38-year-old John Upshaw was found deceased at a gas station in west Toledo, Ohio. Initial reports from the Toledo Police Department indicated that Upshaw's death was the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the days following the incident, the community expressed grief over Upshaw's passing. A memorial page dedicated to him received numerous tributes, with 81 candles lit in his honor.
