On the morning of December 2, 2024, Robeson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 1400 block of Williamson Road in Fairmont, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 71-year-old William Pressley deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
The investigation led to the arrest of Pressley's brother, 69-year-old Lacey Cole Jr., who was present at the scene. Cole was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear. He was taken into custody at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the motive behind the shooting or any additional details surrounding the circumstances of Pressley's death. William Pressley was born on August 31, 1953, in Columbus County, North Carolina. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1973 and held various positions throughout his career, including at Carpostan Industries, Converse, and the Walmart Distribution Center in Hope Mills, from which he retired in 2018. Pressley was known for his love of sports, particularly his support for UNC-Chapel Hill and the Dallas Cowboys. He was also recognized for his encouraging nature and dedication to visiting friends, family, and those in need.
A viewing for Pressley was held on December 15, 2024, followed by a celebration of life at Worley Mortuary & Cremation Service in Fairmont. He is survived by his siblings, nieces, nephews, and other family members who cherish his memory.
