On December 7, 2024, at approximately 1:12 p.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting near Lake Mead Boulevard and D Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 36-year-old Paul Burkhart Jr. and his wife, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Burkhart was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital due to multiple gunshot wounds, while his wife sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigations revealed that the couple had been engaged in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. During the dispute, Burkhart reportedly pushed his wife to the ground. At this point, Burkhart's 18-year-old stepson, Steven Bernard, intervened by retrieving a firearm from his bedroom. Bernard allegedly fired multiple shots, striking both Burkhart and his mother. After the shooting, Bernard collected several firearms from his room and fled the scene in a black four-door vehicle.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Bernard, who was apprehended on December 12, 2024, at a residence in Henderson by the Criminal Apprehension Team. He has been charged with open murder and is currently held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 22, 2025.
