In the winter of 2024, a shooting in Baton Rouge led to the death of 48-year-old Derek Lee. The incident took place on the evening of Saturday, December 21st, in the 1100 block of North 36th Street. Responding to the call, Baton Rouge Police found Lee with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Lee succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
His death was investigated as a homicide by the Baton Rouge Police Department. An obituary for Derrick Darnell Lee, Sr., aged 49, stated he 'departed this life on December 22, 2024.'
The investigation into the shooting continued for several months. In July 2025, an arrest was made in connection with Lee's death. Homicide detectives with the Baton Rouge Police Department took 23-year-old Otis Douglas into custody. Douglas was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He is facing a charge of second-degree murder.
