In what authorities have described as a tragic case of domestic violence, 46-year-old Brandy Ann Manville was killed in her Portage, Indiana, home on November 29, 2024. A well-respected administrative assistant at Portage High School, Brandy was known for her welcoming demeanor and dedication to the students she served. A cancer survivor, she had previously publicly praised her husband, Charles, for his support during her battle with the disease.
The fatal incident unfolded when police
responded to a domestic disturbance call made by the couple's 21-year-old daughter. The daughter reported that her father, 45-year-old Charles Manville, was intoxicated, throwing items, and had armed himself with a gun. During the 911 call, operators overheard Charles threatening that 'everyone was going to die,' which was followed by the sound of gunfire.
Upon forcing entry into the home, officers discovered Brandy deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. Charles Manville was also found dead from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leading authorities to classify the event as a murder-suicide. Their daughter sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a trauma center in serious but stable condition. A teenage son was not home at the time of the shooting. While the motive remains unclear, court records show that Brandy had filed for divorce in July of that year and had sought a restraining order against her husband. Records also indicated that Charles Manville had faced three drunk driving charges in the months leading up to the incident. In the wake of the tragedy, the community has mourned the loss of a woman described as a loving mother and a mentor to many students. Counseling services were made available at Portage High School to support students and staff, and a GoFundMe campaign was established to aid the surviving children.
