On the evening of December 18, 2024, the sense of peace in an Avon, Indiana, apartment complex was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Deputies from the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the Steeplechase at Shiloh Crossing Apartments on Fairmount Court shortly after 9 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Inside one of the units, they discovered 22-year-old Jarell Spires, a male, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders rushed him to IU West Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Jarell Spires quickly led authorities to identify a vehicle of interest. This vehicle was located in Indianapolis, and the person inside, 19-year-old Boluwatife Olubanjo, was taken into custody for questioning. Following the interview, Olubanjo was arrested and booked into the Hendricks County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of assisting a criminal and aiding in the commission of murder.
While an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active and ongoing. As of the initial reports, formal charges directly related to the death of Spires had not been filed against Olubanjo. Authorities have indicated that they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are still seeking to speak with other individuals who may have information about the shooting and have urged anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.
