On December 22, 2024, at approximately 7:27 p.m., 21-year-old Markela Howliet was fatally shot in the 400 block of North Sixth Street in East St. Louis, Illinois. Emergency responders from the Illinois State Police and East St. Louis Police Department arrived at the scene and pronounced her dead. The incident marked the 16th homicide in East St. Louis for the year.
