On June 16, 2018, Shernita Lowery, a 32-year-old African American woman from East St. Louis, Illinois, was fatally shot in the chest. Authorities charged Keonte McCurtis, a resident of Cahokia, Illinois, with her murder. Following his arrest, McCurtis's bond was set at $1 million.

Shernita Lowery was born on March 15, 1986. She was laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Belleville, Illinois.
