In the late morning of Friday, November 29, 2024, the quiet of a residential street in Quitman, Georgia, was shattered by the sound of gunfire, leading to the tragic deaths of two women. Forty-eight-year-old Tamiko 'Polly' Mobley, a Black/African American female, and her 25-year-old daughter, Tiaja Mobley, were found deceased inside Tiaja's home on Shiver Lane, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded after Tamiko had sought refuge at her daughter's residence following a dispute with her husband the previous evening.
Responding to a 911 call, deputies from the Brooks County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Quitman Police Department, arrived at the scene to a devastating discovery. Inside the home, they located the bodies of the mother and daughter. A third individual, identified as the son of the suspect, was also present during the violent encounter and sustained non-fatal injuries from debris caused by the gunfire. The investigation was quickly handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to unravel the sequence of events that led to the double homicide.
The suspect, 44-year-old Wilbert Mobley Jr., was apprehended by law enforcement outside of the residence. He was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges in connection with the deaths of his wife, Tamiko, and his daughter, Tiaja. The charges brought against him included two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Following his arrest, Wilbert Mobley Jr. was booked into the Brooks County Jail. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation, with the findings to be turned over to the District Attorney's Office of the Southern Judicial Circuit for prosecution. The bodies of both Tamiko and Tiaja Mobley were transported to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies to be performed.
