In a tragic turn of events on the night of December 21, 2024, a domestic dispute in a Peoria, Arizona, home escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 45-year-old Warren Honeywood. A Black / African American male, Mr. Honeywood was a father of ten and was known for his work with mentally disabled adults. The incident unfolded at a residence near Olive and 83rd avenues, where Peoria Police officers responded to a call around 11 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr.
Honeywood on the ground inside the home with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary information released by the Peoria Police Department indicated that the shooting was an isolated domestic violence incident. It is believed that a physical altercation began between Mr. Honeywood and a woman in a bedroom of the house. According to reports, the woman's 19-year-old cousin, identified as Joshua Mayfield-Chavez Jr., heard the commotion and intervened. Believing that Mr. Honeywood was reaching for a weapon during the altercation, Mayfield-Chavez Jr. allegedly shot him.
Following the shooting, Joshua Mayfield-Chavez Jr. fled the scene but was later located and arrested by Peoria police in Phoenix. He was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County Jail and is facing a number of serious charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct with a weapon, discharging a firearm within city limits, and endangerment.
