In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 7, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Zakee Amir Shelton of Tolleson, Arizona, was tragically cut short. At approximately 2:02 a.m., Peoria Police officers were dispatched to the Natura Villas Apartments, located at 10847 W. Olive Avenue, after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male, later identified as Zakee Shelton, lying on the ground outside one of the apartments with an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel on the scene immediately began performing life-saving measures on the young man. Despite their efforts, Shelton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was quickly determined to be a homicide, prompting an active investigation by Peoria detectives. Authorities have stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Investigators are actively searching for the individual responsible for Shelton's death. The suspect is described as a younger Black male with a thin build who was wearing dark colored clothing at the time of the incident. This individual fled the scene before law enforcement arrived and is considered to be armed and dangerous. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Peoria Police Department and Silent Witness are urging anyone with information regarding this homicide to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
