On January 27, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, 32-year-old Edward Acosta Jiménez was found fatally shot inside a vehicle alongside 25-year-old Alyssa Perez. The discovery was made by Jiménez's mother outside her residence in the 400 block of Trudell Drive. She alerted authorities after noticing the unfamiliar car and its occupants. Upon arrival, police found both victims with multiple gunshot wounds and collected several shell casings and a plastic cup with potential fingerprints from the scene.
Investigations revealed that Perez had recently ended a relationship with 18-year-old Lazerith Esteban Carrillo. Family members disclosed that Carrillo had previously exhibited violent behavior, including firing a gun at Perez's vehicle a week before the murders.
Hours after the double homicide, Carrillo attempted an armed carjacking approximately a mile from the crime scene. The attempt was thwarted when the intended victim's friend intervened, causing Carrillo to flee. Police apprehended him shortly thereafter, finding him in possession of Perez's cellphone. Ballistic analysis linked the firearm he carried to the shell casings recovered at the murder scene.
Carrillo was subsequently charged with capital murder for the deaths of Jiménez and Perez, as well as with robbery and burglary of vehicles related to the attempted carjacking. As of December 2024, he remains in custody awaiting trial. During a court hearing in November 2024, Carrillo caused a disturbance by yelling and admitting to the crime while waiting for his case to be called.
