On February 11, 2023, 29-year-old Houston resident and father of two, Marcus Mercado, was fatally shot near a convenience store at 9834 Meadowglen Lane. Witnesses reported that Mercado approached Michael Coates, then 20, leading to a heated argument. During the confrontation, Coates drew a pistol and shot Mercado multiple times. Surveillance footage revealed that after Mercado fell, Coates stood over him and fired additional shots to his head before fleeing the scene on foot.

Approximately two hours later, Coates committed an armed carjacking in west Houston. He approached a 75-year-old woman outside her garage, brandished a firearm, and demanded her car keys. Her 77-year-old husband intervened, but Coates threatened him as well, seizing the keys and escaping in their vehicle. The stolen car was found abandoned two days later.

Coates's crime spree continued three days after Mercado's murder when he committed another armed robbery, stealing a man's wallet, car keys, and backpack containing a laptop. Investigators traced the laptop to Coates's apartment, where they discovered a Glock 9mm semiautomatic pistol, later identified as the murder weapon used to kill Mercado. Authorities arrested Coates on March 22, 2023.

In August 2024, Coates was convicted of murder and sentenced to 80 years in prison. During the trial, the jury was presented with evidence of his involvement in the murder of Mercado, the carjacking of the elderly couple, and the subsequent armed robbery. The prosecution emphasized the deliberate and violent nature of Coates's actions, which had a profound impact on multiple victims and their families. Coates will be required to serve at least 30 years before becoming eligible for parole.
