On March 19, 2023, at approximately 5:40 a.m., 29-year-old Gerardo Filomeno and two other men—Jorge Vazquez, 30, and Cesar Villalon, 39—were fatally shot in the parking lot of a strip center located at 10815 Beechnut Street in southwest Houston. The three men had just exited a nearby nightclub when they became involved in a heated argument with an unknown Hispanic male accompanied by a Hispanic female.
The confrontation escalated, leading to multiple gunshots that resulted in the deaths of Filomeno, Vazquez, and Villalon at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, the assailant and his female companion fled the scene, leaving investigators with limited leads. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses captured images of the individuals, prompting the Houston Police Department to release the footage to the public in hopes of identifying the suspects. Family members of the victims, particularly Filomeno's wife, Ashley Montalbo, made heartfelt pleas for information, expressing their grief and the devastating impact of the loss on their families.
After several months of investigation, authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Jordy Barrios. On August 30, 2023, a capital murder charge was filed against Barrios in the 209th State District Court. The female companion was identified as a witness and is not expected to face charges. Despite the charges, Barrios remained at large, with law enforcement agencies urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
The tragic incident not only claimed the lives of three individuals but also left their families in profound grief. Filomeno, a father of two young boys, was remembered by his wife as "the sweetest, the nicest person ever," who had no known conflicts with anyone. The families of all three victims continue to seek justice and closure, hoping for the apprehension of Barrios to bring some measure of peace to their lives.
