On the evening of March 26, 2023, 61-year-old Martin William Davis was fatally shot outside his residence in the 1600 block of Waco Street in Gatesville, Texas. Davis had just returned from a trip to H-E-B and was unloading groceries when three individuals approached him near his open front door. One of the suspects fired the fatal shot before all three fled the scene on foot.

In the months following the incident, authorities made significant progress in the investigation. By July 2023, two suspects were identified and arrested. The first, 21-year-old Shawn Michael Smith-Brearey of Temple, was apprehended on July 20 after being indicted by a Coryell County Grand Jury. The second suspect, 32-year-old Trevor Lovell Ford of Gatesville, was already in custody on unrelated charges when he was served with a murder charge warrant.

The investigation continued, and in January 2024, a third suspect was identified. Thirty-four-year-old Scott Allen Harkcom of Gatesville was indicted by a Coryell County Grand Jury on January 25, 2024, for the charge of murder. Harkcom was served with the indictment warrant while already in custody at the Coryell County Jail on an unrelated charge.

The collaborative efforts of the Gatesville Police Department, Texas Rangers, and the Coryell County District Attorney’s Office have been instrumental in bringing these suspects to justice. Chief Brad Hunt emphasized that while the arrests mark significant progress, the case remains open to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable. The community and authorities continue to seek closure for the family of Martin Davis.
