On May 10, 2023, 28-year-old Bethany Marie Mefford was tragically killed by a stray bullet while sleeping in her apartment in Humble, Texas. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the Generation Grove Apartments on Woodland Hills Drive. Earlier that morning, several individuals were reportedly breaking into vehicles in the complex's parking lot. Darius Lewis, a 28-year-old resident of the complex, observed the suspected burglars and, in an attempt to deter them, fired multiple gunshots.
One of these bullets penetrated the wall of Mefford's apartment, fatally striking her as she slept.
Mefford's lifeless body was discovered by her boyfriend around 6:15 a.m. She was a devoted mother to three young children, all under the age of eight. Her family and friends remember her as a bright light and an amazing mother who was always there for others. Her untimely death has left her family devastated, with her sister expressing profound grief over the loss and the impact on Mefford's sons.
Following the incident, Darius Lewis was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He initially claimed to have fired his weapon into the ground to scare off the burglars; however, investigators determined that the evidence did not support his account. Lewis's bond was set at $75,000, and he was required to wear a GPS monitor and refrain from possessing any weapons upon release. In addition to Lewis's arrest, two adults and a juvenile were taken into custody in connection with the vehicle burglaries.
The tragic death of Bethany Mefford underscores the potential consequences of discharging firearms in residential areas, even with the intent of deterring criminal activity.
