On May 13, 2023, 39-year-old Luis Martinez was fatally shot in the parking lot of a La Michoacana store located on West 34th Street in northwest Houston, Texas. Surveillance footage captured Martinez parking his truck near the store's entrance around 10 a.m. and entering the establishment. Approximately 15 minutes later, 33-year-old Angel Chavira arrived with his wife and three children, parking near Martinez's vehicle. Inside the store, Chavira and his family were observed following Martinez.
After some time, Chavira's wife and children exited the store and left in a separate vehicle, while Chavira remained in the parking lot. Around 11 a.m., as Martinez returned to his truck, Chavira approached and opened fire, initially from his vehicle. He then repositioned his car, exited, and fired additional shots into Martinez's truck, resulting in Martinez's death.
The motive behind the shooting was linked to a previous incident involving Chavira's brother, Joe Chavira, who had been killed in a nearby neighborhood. Chavira believed Martinez was responsible for his brother's death and had allegedly threatened Martinez prior to the shooting. Following the incident, Chavira was arrested and charged with murder. He was held at the Harris County Jail with a bond set at $300,000.
Luis Martinez's death has had a profound impact on his family and the local community. An online memorial was created to honor his memory, where friends and loved ones have shared their condolences and memories.
