On May 14, 2023, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Dallas police responded to a shooting in the 900 block of Hoke Smith Drive in the Oak Cliff neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers found 49-year-old Carlos Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Methodist Central Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident occurred during a family gathering at Gonzalez's residence, which included a birthday celebration for his 6-year-old grandchild.
According to reports, the family had been playing music throughout the evening. Neighbor 54-year-old Lonnie Holcombe, who resided next door, had previously expressed frustration over the noise. As Gonzalez's son arrived at the home with music playing from his vehicle, Holcombe allegedly fired a BB gun at the truck, causing damage and striking Gonzalez, who was in the bed of the truck.
A confrontation ensued when Gonzalez and other family members approached Holcombe to address the situation. During the altercation, Holcombe reportedly struck one of the individuals, leading to a physical fight. While being subdued, Holcombe drew a 9mm handgun and shot Gonzalez in the chest. Holcombe remained at the scene and was subsequently arrested by Dallas police. He was charged with murder and held at the Dallas County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
Family members have alleged that Holcombe's actions were motivated by racial animosity, citing previous incidents where he reportedly directed derogatory remarks toward them, including statements such as "You Mexicans shouldn't be here." They also claimed that Holcombe had harassed them for over a year prior to the fatal shooting.
The tragic death of Carlos Gonzalez has left his family seeking justice and mourning the loss of a beloved father and grandfather. The case has drawn attention to issues of neighborly disputes escalating into violence and the potential influence of racial tensions in such conflicts.
