On July 4, 2023, 41-year-old Claudia I. Gallegos was fatally shot in Peñitas, Texas. The incident occurred at approximately 9:22 p.m. at a residence located at 1501 N. 11th St. Upon arrival, police found Gallegos by the driver's door of a Dodge Journey, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to Mission Regional Hospital, she was pronounced dead.
Investigations revealed that Gallegos had been attempting to leave the residence with her daughter, Crystal, when her stepfather, 54-year-old Leonardo Silva, intervened to prevent their departure. Crystal recounted that a week prior, Silva had threatened to take Gallegos's life before ending his own. On the night of the incident, Gallegos's brother, Joshua Silva, heard a loud bang and witnessed his father pointing a handgun toward Gallegos. Leonardo Silva admitted to shooting Gallegos, claiming he intended only to scare her and believed the gun was unloaded. However, evidence indicated that he would have seen bullets in the magazine and had to chamber a round to fire.
Further details emerged that Leonardo Silva had become jealous upon discovering that Gallegos was communicating with another man. This jealousy, coupled with prior threats, culminated in the tragic event. Following his arrest, Silva was charged with murder and held on a $1 million bond. He was indicted on August 8, 2023, and later pleaded guilty to the murder charge. On July 24, 2024, Silva was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of his stepdaughter.
