On May 18, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting incident at the Broadstone Paragon Apartments, located in the 2400 block of N. Washington Avenue in Old East Dallas. Upon arrival, officers discovered two sisters, 22-year-old Jalisa Lockett and 24-year-old Amaya Lockett, deceased from gunshot wounds. A third victim, identified as Moises Flores, who was Amaya's boyfriend, sustained two gunshot wounds and was transported to Baylor Hospital in stable condition.
According to the arrest affidavit, the tragic events unfolded during a gathering at the sisters' apartment. An argument erupted between Jalisa and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Saadiq Shabazz, prompting them to move into a bedroom. Shortly thereafter, multiple gunshots were heard. When Amaya went to check on her sister, Shabazz emerged and fatally shot her. He then turned the gun on Flores, shooting him twice. Flores managed to barricade himself in a room and called 911.
Shabazz fled the scene but was later apprehended in Fort Worth. During police interviews, he admitted to the shootings, stating he acted out of "rage" following the argument with Jalisa, though he claimed he did not intend to kill anyone. Shabazz was charged with capital murder and booked into the Dallas County Jail with a bond set at $3 million.
The Lockett family is now mourning the loss of both daughters, who were young mothers. Jalisa leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter, and Amaya had a 10-month-old son. Their father, Jaunci Lockett, expressed disbelief over the tragedy and emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of domestic issues to prevent such incidents. The family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the surviving children.
