On July 30, 2023, at approximately 8:54 p.m., Killeen police responded to reports of gunfire in the 3300 block of East Rancier Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 24-year-old Richard Xavier Solomon suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services transported Solomon to Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m.
Following an investigation, the Killeen Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Unit identified 20-year-old Killeen resident, Amaun Brandell Gilbert, as a suspect in Solomon's murder. On August 2, 2023, authorities issued a warrant for Gilbert's arrest. The following day, the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force apprehended Gilbert in Copperas Cove without incident, and he was subsequently transported to the Killeen City Jail.
On August 5, 2023, Gilbert was arraigned, and his bond was set at $1 million. The Bell County Grand Jury later indicted Gilbert on charges of murder in connection with Solomon's death. As of December 26, 2023, Gilbert remains in custody, awaiting trial.
The Killeen Police Department has expressed gratitude to the community for its assistance during the investigation and continues to encourage anyone with additional information to come forward. This case marks the third murder investigation in Killeen for the year 2023.
