On January 7, 2024, at approximately 10:40 a.m., Dallas police responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Grambling Drive in Southeast Oak Cliff. Upon arrival, they discovered 17-year-old Lancaster High School student and drill team member, Ikea Imari Hood, deceased from a gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Hood had recently given birth three weeks prior to the incident.
She had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with 17-year-old Trevon Darnell Wright for the past two years. Hood's mother informed authorities that her daughter had planned to tell Wright that he was not the father of her newborn daughter on the day of the shooting.
According to an arrest affidavit, Hood's mother heard a loud noise around 10:30 a.m. and found her daughter's bedroom door locked. Upon checking from outside, she noticed the window open with the screen pushed out and discovered Hood inside with a gunshot wound. Wright had left the scene by the time police arrived.
On January 9, 2024, Wright was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and charged with Hood's murder. He was subsequently booked into the Dallas County Jail.
Hood's death has deeply affected the Lancaster High School community, where she was known for her vibrant personality and dedication to the Tigerette Drill Team. The school has provided counseling services to support students and staff during this difficult time.
A balloon release was held in her honor, with friends and family remembering her as a beautiful soul who was excited about her new journey into motherhood. The community continues to mourn her tragic loss.
