On January 14, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Garland police responded to a shooting incident in the 2300 block of West Buckingham Road, near North Garland High School. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals who had been shot by an unknown assailant. The victims were identified as 18-year-old Alan Jesus Chavez and 17-year-old Ruben Santibanez Arzola, both residents of Wylie, Texas. Despite efforts to save them, both victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Investigators believe that the victims and the suspect may have known each other. A small shrine was placed on the sidewalk in front of a barber academy at the scene, indicating a community mourning the loss.
In the days following the incident, Garland police issued a Directive to Apprehend warrant for 16-year-old Amancio Anton Noriz of Dallas. Noriz was described as Hispanic with dark hair, brown eyes, approximately 4 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighing around 120 pounds. Authorities believed Noriz was involved in the shooting and sought public assistance in locating him.
On January 24, 2024, Laredo police, with assistance from U.S. Marshals, located and detained Noriz in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. He was later deported to the United States and booked into the Webb County Juvenile Detention Center in Laredo, Texas, pending extradition to Garland. Noriz was subsequently transferred to the Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center.
The arrest of Noriz brought relief to the community, which had been seeking justice for the tragic deaths of the two teenagers. The Garland Police Department continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, aiming to provide closure to the victims' families and the community.
